Together with teenagers from the Asia-Pacific region,
thinking about “happiness” on Earth with 10 billion people
“Picture Happiness on Earth” TSUNAGARI Project begins
Miraikan (National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation) premiere’s the “Picture Happiness on Earth *TSUNAGARI Project (*1) in September 2015. This project will create opportunities for teenagers from six countries in the Asia-Pacific region (*2) to consider global issues from multiple scientific and ethical perspectives. With support from Bloomberg L.P., which is promoting STEM education, workshops will be held in each country over the course of a few years.
Miraikan started the “TSUNAGARI Project” in 2011 so an individual could discover a personal relationship to this planet of life, and with others, search together for solutions to the challenges facing all life forms in order to assure the sustainability of Earth. The aim of this new project is to carry out these activities in other Asian Pacific countries as well. In collaboration with science centers in six countries, workshops will be developed and held using the “TSUNAGARI tools” (*3). These workshops will provide a place for the participating teenagers to develop an understanding of different value systems and the necessary scientific thinking to solve issues. What is necessary, in order to bring about a future in which 10 billion people can live happily? We will think about this together with those teenagers who are the future, , and communicate the results.
The result of this project and the process followed will be announced at the Science Centre World Summit to be held at Miraikan in 2017. Miraikan will continue to introduce activities to solve issues on a global scale, to act as a center for science communication for the Asia-Pacific region and for the world.

*1) TSUNAGARI Project
Through collaborations between domestic and international researchers and
artists, scientific information about the Earth is collected and visualized. The project’s mission is, together with people from around the world, to increase knowledge of the self, think of what we should do to pass the current vibrant Earth on to the future, and create a vision for the future.
*2) Science centers of six countries participating in this project (as of September 2015)
-China Science And Technology Museum (Beijing, China)
-The Mind Museum (Manila, Philippines)
-Petrosains (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
-Scitech (Perth, Australia)
-Science Centre Singapore (Singapore)

Workshop Overview
Science center educators and teenagers in countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan, will work together to create content for display on the “Geo-Cosmos” (*3-1). The theme of the project is “What is happiness?” The teenagers participating in the workshops will use the “TSUNAGARI tools” that contain various visualizations of scientific data, and seek out happiness for Earth with 10 billion people.
Project Length
The project will be split into the three phases listed below. The results of each phase will be passed on to the next, in a relay.
Period: September 2015–November 2016
*The schedule from November 2016 onwards will be published on the website as soon as it is determined.
[Phase 1]
Workshops for science center educators @ Miraikan
Educators will be invited to Miraikan from the science centers in the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan, in order to train for the workshops to be held in Phase 2. While learning more about the “TSUNAGARI tools” to be used in the workshops, the educators will share what social issues their countries face and build the workshop program together.
Period: September 28 - 30, 2015
Location: Miraikan
Participants: Six educators from collaborating science centers in Asia-Pacific countries, including Japan
[Phase 2]
Workshops to create the story for “Geo-Cosmos” visual content @ Six Asia-Pacific countries
Based in science centers in each country, the educators that participated in Phase 1 will hold workshops to create thematically appropriate stories for “Geo-Cosmos” visual content, using “Geo-Scope” (*3-2) and “Geo-Palette” (*3-3). The results will be released on a website, and the visual content for Phase 3 will be created based on stories selected one each from science center.
Period: December 2015 - March 2016 (Tentative)
Location: Collaborating science centers in Asia-Pacific countries, including Japan
Participants: Approx. 30 junior high and high school students from the country/region of the science center
[Phase 3]
Workshops to create “Geo-Cosmos” visual content @ Miraikan
Based on the stories selected during Phase 2, video content for display on the “Geo-Cosmos” will be created. This phase will be carried out with female teenagers in order to increase their interest in and understanding of science and technology. Young and emerging creators will provide the necessary technical and visual expression support during the production process.
Period: July-August 2016 (Tentative)
Location: Miraikan
Participants: Approx. 30–60 female junior high and high school students living in Japan
*3 TSUNAGARI Tools
1. “Geo-Cosmos”
The “Geo-Cosmos,” the symbol exhibit of Miraikan, produces a rendition of our
Earth shining brightly in space with a super high precision exceeding 10 million
pixels. It is the world's first "Globe-like display" using organic LED panels. There
are approximately 80 types of video data for display.
2. “Geo-Scope”
This interactive board allows you to access various Earth observation data
collected from domestic and international scientists and research institutes. There
are approximately 40 types of data that can be viewed.
3. “Geo-Palette”
This online service allows you to draw your own world map based on a host of
information related to the countries and regions of the world. You can uncover
many aspects of the Earth's environment and human activities.
